VEIGUES (ヴェイグス ), or Veigues: Tactical Gladiator in the US Release, is a Japanese shooting-action game developed by Game Arts for the PC Engine. A graphically enhanced version was released for the TurboGrafx-16 and PC Engine in 1990 in the US. It was eventually later ported for Windows by Project EGG in 2003.
Plot[]
On October 8, 2321 AD, a city of the pacific coast was attacked by a mysterious enemy of unknown origin. After much investigation, the enemy was discovered to be located 55~545 fathoms beneath the South Pacific Ocean. To combat against the enemy (labelled as the "Mizgar Serpent (ミズガルズサーペント)"), humanity began development on their anti-weapon sampling from salvaged enemy wreckage.
3 years later (2324) at the cost of many sacrifices, humanity's last hope was completed and its name is "Veigues", to which Operation Last Rally (オペレーション・ラストラリー) finally commences.
Gameplay[]
Veigues Tactical Gladiator is a fast-paced side-scrolling game featuring an enormous mech suit that can both shoot and punch enemies that appear in waves. The mech has a lot of shield strength, which slowly regenerates if the player isn't being hit, but can eventually be overwhelmed. Parts will be destroyed as the shield drops to zero, giving the player a small amount of extra shield but removing functionality in the process. Between stages, the player can upgrade various parts of the mech with points they earned from defeating enemies and ending the stage with a lot of shields.
